This series was shot alongside the English Defence League (EDL) during demonstrations in central London and Essex. Formed in Luton by Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon (known as Tommy Robinson), the group claimed its objective was to counter “Islamic extremism in the UK.” However, the movement is broadly anti-Muslim and xenophobic consistent with wider far-right ideology.
Most supporters were motivated by a desire to protect England, their identity, and a culture they perceive to be under threat. This project is an attempt to understand those drivers and to explore what continues to push people towards these movements as the far right grows across the UK.
